The current Seven Essential Competencies of a Valencia Educator
A message from Celine Kavalec, Faculty Director, Teaching/Learning Academy
I’m happy to share that the Essential Competency Steering Committee received valuable feedback from faculty and deans collegewide upon review of the draft version of the revised competencies.
Reviewing the competencies was important for a couple of reasons. A refresher was in order as the competencies have not had a thorough review since their inception in 2000. Secondly, the review is timely, because the faculty evaluation process now asks faculty to reflect on their practice and establish goals through the lens of the competencies.
Feedback from the academic community was largely supportive of keeping the general competency areas with comments for change directed primarily at specific indicators. Research conducted by the work teams generally echoed that sentiment.
There was no strong call to change the number of competencies or headings of the competency areas, so we left those alone. These changes reflect current Valencia practices and research, salient external academic research and national conversations in relevant competency areas, such as inclusion and diversity.
The Committee will meet to discuss the feedback, integrate it into the current draft and determine next steps for sharing the second draft revisions. We will host campus-based conversations in late September during which all members of Valencia’s academic community are encouraged to attend one of the sessions.
