A Letter from the Director of Employee Relations

Dear Supervisors,
Joining Valencia College is a wonderful opportunity and I am honored to become part of this family as the director of employee relations. As part of the office for organizational communication and development, the purpose of employee relations is to assist in the employer-employee relationship, which plays an integral part of satisfactory motivation, productivity, and morale. We are here to serve as a “sounding board” for employees and supervisors who are having interpersonal conflicts with colleagues, or who need assistance with performance or conduct problems in the workplace.
In order for the employee relations office to provide an effective service to supervisors and employees, it is essential for Valencia to evaluate our approach to dispute resolution. As you may be aware, this initiative commenced several months ago with the formation of the Dispute Resolution Design Principles Team, which developed a set of design principles to guide the process development work.
More recently the College Operations Council (COC) tasked a new team with using those design principles in moving forward to review, revise, and recreate the college’s approach to dispute resolution, including both the formal and informal processes. We are in the beginning stages of working with the new Dispute Resolution Policies and Procedures Design Team, which has full representation from faculty, professional, and career staff.
A last component essential to employee relations is our partnership with our employee development team. The goal of this partnership is to create and deliver training for employees and supervisors on effective techniques for addressing challenging situations, having tough conversations, and creating an open and inclusive workplace.
I look forward to getting to know each of you and to supporting you as we continue building Valencia as an excellent place to work and learn.

While some of the members are determined by their role at the college, a number of members are selected from groups such as Faculty, Deans, Admin & Professional, and Career Service. The meetings are open to anyone. The next meeting is Wednesday, November 14th on East Campus room 3-113 at 8:30 a.m.
