An Update on the Seneff Honors College Redesign

A Message from Robyn Brighton, Director, Strategic Learning Initiatives

In spring 2019, we began conducting research and convening conversations to gather feedback about the elements of our Seneff Honors College that must be consistent across all of our campuses. We also wanted to formulate a vision for the design of a new model that provides accessible experiences for all students at every campus. Here’s an update on the work completed since my last update in September 2019.

The 24 members of the Honors Design Team convened four times throughout the fall 2019 term to gain an in-depth understanding of Valencia’s Seneff Honors College and consider how we want our students to experience honors at Valencia. The group felt it was critical to involve students early on in the redesign and made an effort to include them in meetings and interviews to gather their feedback.

Success Criteria and Findings

When asking ourselves, “what will success look like?” the Honors Design Team crafted six criteria in response to data collected through campus forums, surveys, interviews and various activities. The Seneff Honors College should:

  1. Provide consistent, equitable and accessible experiences for all students at every campus;
  2. Maintain a coordinated, collegewide model that supports students at every campus;
  3. Plan for ongoing assessment for continuous improvement;
  4. Offer clear pathways to an honors recognition regardless of prior academic experiences or degree program at Valencia;
  5. Include an innovative and academically rigorous curriculum; and
  6. Foster a supportive and collaborative community of learners and educators.

Honors Design Conversations

The Honors Design Team is seeking substantive feedback on the draft of success criteria above to help inform the redesign of the Seneff Honors College. As a result, all employees and students are invited to join an Honors Design Conversation. Forum attendees may ask questions and share feedback on the criteria while crafting ideas that can lead to the development of a redesigned honors college.

In addition to campus forums, a survey will be released to capture further insight from the Valencia community.

The feedback and ideas gathered from the campus forums and the survey will be used by Honors Design Team to modify the criteria and select ideas that are workable, innovative and may solve the challenges represented in our data. The group will continue to work throughout the summer 2020 term to move from ideas to solutions. Solutions will include plans for recruitment and admissions, advising and scholarship, curriculum, faculty development, out-of-class experiences and recognition.

As our work on the Honors College model progresses, I will keep you updated via The Grove and The Juice.
