A Message from Robyn Brighton, Director, Strategic Learning Initiatives
Last spring, we began conducting research and convening conversations to gather feedback about the elements of our Seneff Honors College that must be consistent across all of our campuses, as well as formulate a vision for the design of a new model by which campuses can propose their own unique expressions. Here’s an update of the work that’s been completed so far.
During the spring 2019 term, we held one-on-one interviews with seasoned Honors College faculty members, hosted campus conversations with employees and students, and issued a survey for employees and active students in the Seneff Honors College. Overall, we received 145 responses to the interviews, campus conversations and surveys. Of the responses, 15 were from administrators, 50 from faculty members, 12 from staff members and 68 from students.
Following this research, Valencia’s Senior Team commissioned a work proposal for the redesign of the Seneff Honors College program. To view the work proposal, click here.
As part of this proposal, 22 faculty and staff members and administrators will make up an Honors Design Team that will meet bi-weekly throughout the fall term to gain an in-depth understanding of what it means to offer an Honors College and consider how we want our students to experience the program at Valencia. The group will define design principles, which will include a clearly developed mission statement declaring the objectives and responsibilities of the program and defining its place in both the administrative and academic structure of the institution.
On Thursday, August 22, 2019, new and returning Honors College students attended a welcome event at the West Campus Special Events Center. As part of the event, I shared an overview of the redesign and led students in an activity focused on their personal experiences thus far with the Seneff Honors College. These stories will be shared with the design team during its initial meeting on Friday, October 4, 2019, in an effort to better understand who the students are in the Honors College.
As our work on the Honors College model progresses, I will keep you updated via The Grove and The Juice.
