Ask Amy — Practical Advice for Supervisors: How Can I Best Prepare My Team for Upcoming Changes Due to FLSA?Share
A Message from Amy Bosley, Vice President, Organizational Development and Human Resources
As Valencia employees — and people from across the nation — learn about the recent changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), it’s only natural they feel curiosity, concern and, in some cases, angst. However, it’s important to keep in mind that these changes are being made to positively impact workers across the U.S., and Valencia is doing everything in its power to ensure a smooth transition. As a supervisor, I ask that you remember this and help communicate this concept to your employees who will look to you for guidance during this period of change.
To ensure a smooth transition, Organizational Development and Human Resources (ODHR) has been collaborating with colleagues through the College to review how these changes will impact our policies and procedures and day-to-day work lives.
The result is a set of carefully constructed changes that will enable us to comply with the new ruling, best serve our employees in an inclusive and fair workplace environment and set the College up for our future as our community continues to count on us for access to the highest quality higher education experience.
The full scope of proposed changes, which do not include a base pay reduction for any employees, were communicated in the Supervisor Summit on Friday, September 9, 2016, and will continue to be communicated in the upcoming Total Rewards meetings. In these forums, I will share the FLSA-driven changes, receive input from our colleagues and share implementation plans and next steps, including the board-level action required to enact the changes.
I encourage both you and your team to attend an open forum. Even if you heard the information at the Supervisor Summit, you are encouraged to attend and hear one more time so you have a better grasp on the proposed changes. If you did not attend the summit, it is vital that you attend an open forum. Your team members are counting on you to know what’s going on and to help them understand the impact of the changes. I’d also ask that you strongly encourage your team members to attend a forum. We have scheduled them on every campus and at various times throughout the day on each campus to ensure that all of our colleagues can attend.
While these meetings will provide general information about the changes as they pertain to the College at large, employee-specific information will not be shared at the forums, and individuals whose exemption status is changing and their supervisors will be contacted individually in October.
Throughout this process, I ask that you lead with a positive attitude and calm approach as your team looks to you for direction and reassurance. If you have questions or feel uncertain about the changes, please reach out to our ODHR team for support
