Attention Faculty: Join the Gen Ed Discipline Discussions on November 30

A message from Karen Borglum, Assistant Vice President of Curriculum and Articulation

On Friday, November 30 we will host a series of discipline-based conversations at the Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) about the proposed changes to the General Education (Gen Ed) curriculum. More specifically, we will discuss the recommended core courses and invite feedback that will be taken to the State Gen Ed Steering Committee for their consideration before any changes occur.

While this will be the first time for feedback, there will be other opportunities for your input from now through May 2013. Remember, the first 15 hours of general education will be standardized among all state colleges and universities, but we will have local discretion over the remaining 15 hours. At the November 30 conversations, we will begin a dialogue about how to approach the discussion and related decisions about these 15 institutional general education hours.

The facilitators for each discipline are: John Niss (math), Kevin Mulholland (humanities), Lee Thomas (social science), and Karen Borglum (communications and science). The times, rooms, and GoTo Meeting options are listed below.

You can also watch the video below of a discussion I had with Susan Ledlow, vice president of academic affairs and planning, and Rob McCaffrey, Faculty Association president, about the proposed changes to the Gen Ed curriculum.

What should A.S. faculty know about this process? Will there need to be changes to the 15 credit hours of general education typically in the A.S. programs?
