A Message from Patti Smith, Chief Information Officer, Office of Information Technology
As you know, Valencia has been in the process of transitioning to a new release of the Banner software platform. I am pleased to share that we are now in the final stages of finalizing the upgrade and transition to Banner 9, which will deliver a number of important enhancements, including a modern, web-based look, enhanced navigation and process management tools, as well as new functionality. It will also give us greater flexibility as we’ll be able to use Banner on any browser (we are no longer restricted to using Internet Explorer) and on tablets.
With any system upgrade, we know that you may be concerned about the change, and we have been working closely with our functional teams and test groups of Banner users to understand and anticipate those changes. Most of the feedback that other institutions have provided indicates that getting used to the new look and navigation takes minimal effort; it’s simply a matter of getting comfortable with the new way of using Banner.
Timeline and Resources
Currently, the timeline to transition to Banner 9 will begin in October. In preparation for the move, I’d like to share several resources with you.
First, a Banner 9 Resource channel will be created next week in Atlas on the Employees tab. Located under Employee Information on the right side of the page, the Banner 9 Resources channel will house navigation videos, instructional webinars for each Banner module, shortcut documents and many other informational items. You will want to check this Banner 9 Resources channel often for announcements and updated material.
In addition, later this month, open lab sessions will be held on all campuses, providing you with an opportunity to get hands-on with Banner 9. Attend these sessions to explore the new navigation and features, and have your questions answered by our functional techs before we go live. A schedule of dates, times and locations for the open labs will be published in the Banner 9 Resources channel.
Final Phase Out
Beginning Monday, October 15, 2018, all users will be able to access Banner 9 in our production environment. The current version of Banner will remain in place to give all Banner users the opportunity to learn Banner 9, while still having the current version available. On Monday, November 5, 2018, the College will fully transition to Banner 9, and the current version of Banner will be retired.
