You may remember that back in March 2014, I highlighted Alex Castro’s experience meeting President Obama when he visited West Campus. Alex is a student from Poinciana who successfully completed the REACH program and now serves as a Student Leader while preparing to graduate from Valencia this spring.

alex-castro-summit-270wAs the result of President Obama’s visit in March, Valencia received an invitation to attend the White House Summit on Working Families on Monday, June 23, 2014. I had the privilege of attending, as did Alex. I’m sure you can imagine what an incredible thrill it was for her to visit our nation’s capital, as well as hear from President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden. In addition, we had the opportunity to hear from other leaders who discussed issues facing our nation’s economic future.

After returning from Washington, DC, the Orlando Sentinel asked to interview Alex in relation to Valencia’s plans to build a new campus in Poinciana. She was featured in the article, which ran on the front page of the Sentinel on Thursday, June 26, 2014.

So, seeing the President of the United States and being quoted on the front page in the “Orlando Sentinel”— I’d say that’s not bad for one week! Keep up the great work, Alex. We can’t wait to see what amazing things you’ll accomplish next.
