feb2015-BOT-mtg-groveDuke Energy Provides $80,000 Rebate to Valencia for Conserving Energy

Congratulations Valencia! All of our work to conserve energy is paying off, as the Wednesday, February 25, 2015, District Board of Trustees meeting kicked off with a check presentation by Duke Energy, Valencia’s energy provider, to the College for $80,000 in energy savings.

Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct Policy Adopted

Trustees approved a “Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct” policy, which amends existing College policy to better reflect Valencia’s practices in regard protecting Valencia’s students, employees, interns, volunteers and visitors.

This amended policy, as adopted by the District Board of Trustees, reaffirms the College’s commitment to provide equal opportunity for employment and educational opportunities to all applicants for employment, employees, applicants for admission, students and others affiliated with the College, without regard to race, ethnicity, color, national origin, age, religion, disability, marital status, sex/gender, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity and any other factor protected under applicable federal, state and local civil rights laws, rules and regulations (collectively referred to as “protected status”). The policy and related procedures will be administered by the College’s Title IX coordinator/Equal Opportunity officer.

The Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct policy prohibits all forms of discrimination and harassment based on the protected statuses mentioned above. Included is a prohibition against sexual assault and sexual exploitation, which by their definitions involve conduct of a sexual nature and are prohibited forms of sexual or gender-based harassment.

The revised policy was collaboratively developed by Valencia staff and faculty over the past year, was informed by consultation with external experts and reflects current regulatory requirements and identified best practices.

The implementation of this policy will involve an extensive communication plan and appropriate training for students, faculty and staff. Also, Valencia has formalized and strengthened its partnerships with external resources to assist in the implementation efforts.

The following respondents were selected for negotiations: FSI, Inc. and Ovations Food Services, LP for retail food services, and the Vending Station and Canteen for vending services.

Student Government Association to Conduct Research for a New Mascot

Stephanie Sookhram, West Campus Student Government president, explained a new SGA project to explore a possible new Valencia mascot to replace the existing Matador. The group will work with students collegewide to propose new ideas and design a new mascot to launch during Valencia’s 50th anniversary in 2017.
