Bob Gessner Invited to Serve on FMI STEM Foundation

A Message from Terri Graham, Interim President, West and Downtown Campuses

Kudos to Bob Gessner, dean, science, for being asked to serve on the board of directors of the Florida Math Institute (FMI) STEM Foundation. The FMI STEM Foundation and its FMI STEM Academy provide STEM education through awareness activities and individualized instructional methods.

“As a former Evans and West Orange High School teacher, this is the kind of work that is near to my heart,” Bob explained. “Letting people in our West Orange community know about the work the FMI STEM Academy does, is why I am excited to help.”

The FMI STEM Academy cultivates the development of academic persistence needed for both college-bound and technical, career-bound high school students pursuing careers or degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. The Academy offers a challenging yet personalized curriculum in classes that are intentionally small so individualized attention can be provided. In addition, the Academy believes strongly that each student needs to interact with business leaders to determine “the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful” of their intended careers.

“To the leaders of the FMI STEM Academy, math is an art, not a science,” Bob added.

The FMI STEM Academy is a non-denominational, private school that primarily serves sixth through 12th graders and also targets adult learners who have dropped out/stepped away from the educational process (e.g. teenage parents, school dropouts, etc.). It provides academic support to students who have parents who have lost their jobs and cannot afford to pay for tutoring services and offers summer camps for students from low-income areas, especially the East Winter Garden/Ocoee areas.

“Every year, the FMI Academy conducts a Math-Tech STEM Camp, for which they are currently looking to fund some of their students through donations,” Bob explained. “This summer, the FMI STEM Academy is partnering with the West Orange Dream Center to offer a Math-Technology camp to help youth regain their academic footing and have a little fun.”

In the math segment, the youth will review basic foundational skills and grade-level math concepts with which they have struggled this year. In the technology segment, they will learn how to create stunning 3D print designs, learn the principles of circuitry and participate in other hands-on STEM activities.

In the past, parents have sent their children to FMI camps because of the gains they have realized in math, even by attending for only one week. Learn more about camp activities by visiting the FMI STEM Academy’s website or watching this video of the Math-Technology Campus 2020.

If you are interested in supporting students who would like to attend the STEM Camp, contact Bob at or 407-299-5000, extension 1321.
