Valencia’s Collaborative Design Center (CDC), created to help our employees and local businesses design solutions for cultural change, is experiencing some changes of its own.
On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, the senior team approved a proposal for the CDC to move under Organizational Development and Human Resources (OD/HR). Previously, the CDC was part of the Professional and Continuing Education team.
“The business model for the CDC is to spend about 30 percent of the time and effort with outside, paying clients who enable us to pay for the 70 percent of the time and effort with inside clients,” shared Amy Bosley, vice president, organizational development and human resources. “We are changing the reporting structure to reflect that model and to make possible a deeper connection among the resources of the CDC with major organizational design and development efforts.”
The CDC will continue to focus on design solutions for cultural change, critical problems and future development, but the internal work will change substantially with significantly more efforts related to strategic thinking, projects and programs.
In addition to the move to OD/HR, Gert Garman, director, Collaborative Design Center, will leave her Valencia role to pursue her own business after Thursday, June 30, 2016, but she will continue to partner with the College in a consultant capacity.
“I’m excited (and scared) to begin my own venture, but I’m going to take my experiences and start a new journey,” exclaimed Gert. “But, the best news is even though I won’t be working in the capacity as the director of the Collaborative Design Center any longer, I will still be part of the Valencia family as a partner. So, I’m not really leaving home! I will continue to bring in external clients as a revenue stream for the College, as well as help with internal projects as needed. It’s really the best of both worlds, and I’m excited for the next iteration of my relationship with the College. Valencia and the people here are too special to completely give up.”
Gert added, “My almost three years here at Valencia College has been transformative for me. My position allowed me to work with so many amazing colleagues internally, and, quite frankly, make some awesome friends. And because Valencia is such an integral community partner, I was able to get back out in the community and represent the College while working on some important projects that affect so many of us. Valencia’s reputation is stellar, and I am proud to be a part of the College and our efforts here.”
With Gert’s departure, a new role will be created — director, organizational development and Collaborative Design Center — and will be a strategic partner for the OD/HR team and the senior team in understanding organizational dynamics, planning and implementing large-scale organizational change, while helping align the organizational design and development strategies with the long-term vision of the College. The individual will also be responsible for developing capacity for collaboration by design throughout the College. This job will be posted in mid-May.
Katie Tagye will continue her role as CDC faculty fellow for the next year.
