College Planning Council Meeting Summary – September 22, 2011

On September 22, the College Planning Council (CPC) had their first meeting of the semester, which included welcoming Donna Deitrick as the new career staff representative. The council had many items on their agenda, including an update from the co-chairs of the Governance Review Steering Committee.

Together, Michele McArdle, Dean of the Winter Park Campus and Michael Shugg, Professor of Theatre are leading a small group of faculty, staff and administrators in examining our current governance system to determine what is working well and identify areas of improvement. This committee was charged by the CPC earlier this year to review our governance system, and ultimately make recommendations for change based on their findings.

To date, the Governance Review Steering Committee has made some interesting and informative discoveries about our current system, all of which can be found in the full report here. For example, the committee found that individuals, who are not in leadership positions, do not feel informed about governance issues, nor do they feel engaged in Valencia’s governance process. Yet, many employees feel, however, that governance is an important part of Valencia’s day-to-day operations.

Currently, the committee is drafting recommendations for changes to our governance system. Check The Juice regularly for updates on this work. To view the full CPC agenda and meeting minutes, download a full summary here.
