Culinary Students Compete in IGNITE Collegiate Challenge

Eight of Valencia College’s culinary students competed for scholarships during the inaugural IGNITE Collegiate Culinary Competition at the Taste of Colorado Show on Friday, October 18, 2019, at the Omni Orlando Resort at Championsgate.

The competition — presented by Colorado Boxed Beef Company — featured four teams of two Valencia students cooking on the show floor with the presenter’s products to exhibit their passion for performance, execution and creativity for the culinary arts.

Teams competed in two, fast-paced, initial rounds. Round one was the High River Angus competition, in which the teams had 15 minutes to craft a recipe containing Sirloin Bavette and a side dish from ingredients provided in a mystery basket, and 30 minutes to prepare it for the judges. Round two was the Diamond Reef competition where two different teams competed in the same format using mahi-mahi as the protein.

Winning teams from the two rounds advanced to the championship, a surf-n-turf competition featuring Chuck Shoulder Petite Tender and Tail on Shrimp, plus a mystery basket. Each round was judged by three individuals on performance, execution and creativity.

Congratulations to students Erica Gardner and Carlington Brissett who won first place and a $2,000 scholarship. Runner-ups included Joseph Martin and Monica Clay, who each received a $1,000 scholarship.
