A Message from Wendy Givoglu, Interim President, East and Winter Park Campuses

This year, as services moved online, so did our Valencia Staff Association (VSA) events. Laura Skelton, staff assistant II and VSA president, worked with Grenka Fletcher, coordinator, academic affairs and VSA representative, to build upon the VSA’s goals in the areas of growth, connections and mentorship. Two virtual events took place during the fall semester.

A virtual yoga session took place on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, and was led by Jen Katz, teaching lab supervisor. The class focused on full body engagement through yoga postures designed for participants at all levels of experience. Jen incorporated mind-body elements and mindfulness/ Participants left feeling refreshed and renewed.

On Wednesday, November 18, 2020, VSA hosted a virtual reality tour of one of Salvador Dali’s artworks, guided by Elizabeth Faulcon, part-time faculty, humanities. Elizabeth featured Dali’s “Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet’s ‘Angelus’” painting and discussed Dali’s artistic inspirations growing up. More than 30 staff members attended the event. Elizabeth ended the virtual experience with an open discussion where staff members shared their thoughts about Dali‘s art. To dive deeper into the art, view Elizabeth’s blog featuring Dali.

As a parting gift, participants were emailed a “2020 Winter Guide” featuring current and upcoming socially distant art exhibits in Orlando.

VSA spring virtual events are currently being scheduled. If you have ideas for future events or have questions about VSA, please contact Laura at lskelton@valenciacollege.edu or Grenka at gbajramoski@valenciacollege.edu.
