East Campus Colleagues Present Best Practices at National Conference

A Message from Stacey Johnson, President, East and Winter Park Campuses

Professor of Chemistry Vasudha Sharma presented in the American Association of Colleges and Universities Conference, which was themed “Transforming STEM Higher Education: Confirming the Authority of Evidence,” from Thursday, November 8 – Saturday, November 10, 2018. Vasudha’s innovation/ideation session, “From Cookbook-Style Labs to Lab Design: Exploring Writing Across the Curriculum Interventions,” summarized the results of her intervention of amalgamating the writing across curriculum with undergraduate research in the embedded model.

Vasudha also presented a poster, titled “Exploring Alternative Ways to Think and Act in an Undergraduate Research Laboratory: A Bird’s Eye View.” The presentation focused on the design and scaffolding of the activity itself and how it was perceived by the students, including their artifacts, growth in intangible skill set, feedback, faculty perceptions and future directions.

“The conference was a unique experience for me since it encouraged exploration of evidence-based approaches to undergraduate STEM teaching and innovative methods to broaden participation,” shared Vasudha.
