East Campus Library Provides Numerous Resources for Faculty

A Message from Stacey Johnson, President, East and Winter Park Campuses

With the 2018-19 academic year about to start, the East Campus Library team is planning to support students, faculty and staff with a number of resources, which will include:

  • Reserved Textbooks — The reserved collection offers students access to hundreds of East Campus course textbooks. A four-hour loan period allows students to take the textbook to class or complete their assignments in the library. Division and faculty textbook donations are always welcomed.
  • Classes on Library Instruction — Taught by librarians, these classes are great for helping students complete research assignments and navigate through the library’s 130-plus databases. Students will leave with a better understanding of credible sources and sound research techniques. Plus, the instructions are fully customizable — based on faculty and student needs.
  • LibGuides — Available to support students in all of their undergraduate research assignments, LibGuides are online, multimedia research guides that identify library books and databases for specific research assignments. Class documents and handouts are also able to be uploaded to make this resource a one-stop shop for students.
  • Research Assignment Consultation — Librarians are available to review research assignments to ensure that they align with current information literacy standards. Also, librarians will work to ensure that there are sufficient library resources available to students for their topics.
    • Library Workshops

• Fake News: These open, face-to-face workshops demonstrate proven tips and methods for spotting fake news and also how to find credible information. The workshop also touches upon media bias, why people are susceptible to fake news and tips for how to recognize and limit personal biases.
• Plagiarism: “Give credit where credit is due” is the motto of this workshop. Topics discussed include intellectual property, copyright and citations. Along the way, students will hear cautionary tales of newsworthy cases that highlight the real-world consequences of plagiarism.
• Google Like A Boss: Learn to use Google with confidence in this interactive, hands-on workshop. Participants search Google with tips and tricks that will help them to retrieve more meaningful search results.

      • Request Materials — The library encourages faculty, staff and students to request and make suggestions for items, such as books, DVDs, journals and databases, that support coursework and reflect the information needs of the campus.
      • Information Literacy Modules in the Canvas Commons — The library has an emerging technologies librarian who specializes in adapting information literacy curriculum for online learning. The following modules are equipped with built-in practice quizzes and a final test that can be used as an assessment.

• Plagiarism 101
• How to Spot Fake News
• MLA Crash Course
• APA Crash Course

        • Library Liaisons — Each East Campus Academic Division has a librarian liaison who provides library updates, assists faculty with research needs and collaborates on projects. Librarian liaisons order library materials for their assigned areas and attend division meetings.

If you have any questions about the above resources, please contact East Campus Librarian Diane Dalrymple at ddalrymple1@valenciacollege.edu or 407-299-5000, extension 2887.
