Energy Hero Program Honors Those with Energy-Saving Ideas

2013-14-energy-heroes-groveCongratulations to this year’s Energy Heroes for supporting, implementing or submitting energy-saving ideas that were cost effective and put into operation at the College. Each Energy Hero, honored at Learning Day, received a certificate along with a $35 gift card.

We congratulate this year’s Energy Heroes, who are members of the West Campus custodial staff under the leadership of Melvin Scott, custodial supervisor and one of the pioneers of Valencia’s Green Cleaning program, and Melvin Felton, custodial assistant supervisor.

This year’s Energy Heroes understood the value of the energy savings program and maximized their work schedules in between terms and adjusted their methods of cleaning. Through their efforts, Valencia saved an estimated $71,000 in energy costs during the 2012 – 2013 academic year.

Some key contributing factors in energy cost savings by previous Energy Heroes included:

  • Relocating classrooms or services to maximize building usage.
  • Responding and taking action in a timely manner to energy saving alerts and requests.

During the 2011 – 2012 academic year, the Office of Sustainability’s Energy Education Program launched the Energy Hero program, which is co-sponsored by the Valencia Foundation and Helen Von Dolteren-Fournier, attorney and certified financial planner, AEGIS Advisors, LLC and Valencia Foundation Legacy Society member.

Nominations for the 2014 Energy Champion and Hero recognition awards may be submitted at any time to Patti Riva, operations manager, energy education program, at priva@valenciacollege.edu.

No forms are necessary; simply email your idea or program. What’s more, Patti shares that no energy-saving ideas are too small. “Switching off your lights when you leave your office instead of relying on the sensor, for example, over time can add up if each employee participates.”

Contact Patti at priva@valenciacollege.edu or extension 5495 if you have questions or suggestions.
