A Message from Falecia Williams, President, West and Downtown Campuses
In December, Valencia successfully hosted another Undergraduate Research Poster Showcase. During the showcase, 18 students and student groups shared their ongoing research projects with members of the Orlando community. Participating students had the opportunity to network with fellow researchers and interact with faculty members from both Valencia College and the University of Central Florida (UCF). Close to 100 faculty, students and community members came together to share in the end-of-term presentations.
Winners from the Undergraduate Research Poster Showcase are as follows:
- First Place — Comparison of Mitochondrial Genomes of Economically Important Land Plants by Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program student Faith Sauber
- Second Place — Chemiluminescence in Lophine and other Substituted Imidazoles: Current Clinical and Non-Clinical Applications and Potential Future by students Megan Dowdell, Lisa Harrison and Elijah Searle
- Third Place — The Hidden Energy in Rainfall by student Esteban Benero
We are hoping to increase the number of participants for the spring event, which is scheduled for Friday, April 19, 2019, on East Campus.
As always, the showcase is open to all students. If you know a student who would like to present a poster, please consider submitting a project abstract when the application opens on Friday, March 1, 2019. Please note that all eligible students must be working with a Valencia faculty member and have completed a research project during their time at the College. Both classroom projects and independent research studies are allowed.
If you have any students interested in undergraduate research at Valencia College, please refer them to Melonie Sexton, professor of psychology, and undergraduate research coordinator, at UR@valenciacollege.edu or 407-299-5000, extension 5632.
