Featured Colleague — Erin Tuttle

erin-tuttle-fc-groveBy Joy S. Jones

Erin Tuttle has been a member of the Valencia family since 2006. In her current role in employee development as coordinator of supervisor development, she ensures that supervisors and leaders have what they need to lead their teams effectively.

Her expansive view of “leadership” guides the way she approaches her work. “Leadership isn’t a title — it’s action. You don’t have to have a title to be a leader,” she says.

Toward that end, she enjoys working with a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about strengthening connections, developing skills and recognizing the great work of Valencia employees at all levels collegewide.

Erin truly enjoys her role connecting employees with tools and resources for development and is proud of the expansion of leadership development programs formulated under the PIVOT system over the past year, designed to cultivate and refine leadership skills, no matter where an employee is within the organization.

“There are always new and exciting projects, programs and events cooking in employee development,” she says, “and with the development of PIVOT, the multi-tiered approach to leadership development, we are now providing opportunities for employees to build leadership skills and strengthen employee and supervisory competencies at all stages of development.”

What’s more, Erin values the many ways she gets to collaborate with colleagues throughout the course of her daily work, who are committed to the same goal. “I am honored to interact with individuals who genuinely seek ways to enrich the Valencia experience for our employees and students.”

The handiwork of such collaboration was on display at Learning Day 2014 where Erin played a pivotal role in its success, securing speakers and coordinating the day’s format and agenda during which 1,152 employees partook in a shared development opportunity that was equal parts inspiration, training and service learning.

“Erin is such a joy to work with and be around, shares Erin’s colleague Leda Pacheco, coordinator, employee development. “She is very passionate about her job and always goes above and beyond to ensure that our employees and supervisors get the best learning and leadership experiences. She is also a great leader and Learning Day is a good example of this. She collaborated with different divisions around the College and coordinated multiple aspects of the day to make sure our employees had a unique opportunity to learn and celebrate.”

While Erin is inspired by the leadership and dedication of many individuals at the College, she says Amy Bosley, interim vice president human resources and diversity, is a major influence. She met Amy in 2009 when she was the facilitator of her Valencia Leadership Academy cohort.

“Amy is truly a visionary leader who leads with compassion. The example she sets for our team is one of sincere, open and honest communication. She challenges our thinking and encourages us to be our best, to think about how we can serve our employees and students better and to recognize one another and celebrate the accomplishments we achieve along the way. Amy inspires me to be a better leader.”

Amy enjoys Erin’s leadership as well. “Erin’s energy and enthusiasm is positively contagious and she brings everything she can to the table when we are creating something new,” Amy shares. “I’m always impressed with her ability to understand the strategic vision AND execute the smallest detail for any project. I enjoy learning with and from Erin as we create new ways to support our supervisors.”

Erin says that what makes Valencia a special place to work is its employees “who transform lives in big and small ways every day. The personal connections and care and the desire to continually learn and grow inspires excellence in one another, and in turn, in our students. I think Valencia signifies inspiration in our community.”

Erin previously served as coordinator of conference and meeting planning services in the college and community relations department. From 2012 – 13, she served on the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) executive committee as the professional development chair.

Erin earned her Associate in Arts degree from St. Petersburg College, Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Central Florida and Master of Arts degree from Rollins College in corporate communications and technology.
