Featured Colleague – Carol Millenson

By Chara Young

As the Manager of Continuing Education and Clinical Compliance, Carol Millenson collaboratively develops and manages the delivery of continuing education for a variety of healthcare fields. Located on the West Campus in Valencia’s Nursing and Allied Health Division, Carol also manages clinical compliance operations for students and faculty.

Carol came to Valencia in September 1998, and since that time has been inspired “by students and the opportunity to consistently raise the bar on their learning experience.” She is passionate about Valencia and routinely wears her Valencia name tag when out in the community. Carol says that she “takes every opportunity to encourage a student at the grocery register, speak with a parent whose son or daughter is considering Valencia, or talk to professionals about what we offer for their professional development.”

So in May 2008, when Carol’s routine mammogram screening revealed suspicious sites that were later determined to be cancer, she approached her circumstance with the same passionate determination that she always has. Ironically, prior to her diagnosis, Carol frequently served as a counselor to breast cancer patients, and had a clinical understanding of the disease and the subsequent processes involved. This knowledge, coupled with her experience and passion for life helped her remain positive. In July 2008, Carol underwent bilateral mastectomy surgery, and fortunately, was able to avoid chemotherapy and radiation.

Today, Carol tells her story from multiple perspectives – as a counselor, a patient, and as a breast cancer survivor. Carol, along with fellow breast cancer survivors, is a member of the Warriors on Water, a Central Florida Dragon Boat paddling team. Through their efforts, the Warriors on Water are raising awareness to help fight breast cancer.

On October 16, Carol will participate in the 2011 Susan B. Komen Central Florida Race for the Cure at the UCF Brighthouse Stadium. You can show your support for Team Carol, and other Breast Cancer Survivors by running, walking, making a donation or even sleeping. Visit Komen Race for the Cure for more details.

Carol holds a master’s degree in marriage and family counseling from Stetson University, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and education from Eastern Nazarene College. Her career spans three industries including bank data processing management, family counseling, and education. Prior to joining Valencia, she served for five years as Director of Patient and Family Services in Hospice care and served clients in private practice counseling, all with a common thread of education and training.
