Featured Colleague — Dan Compte

dan-compte-fc-groveBy Wendy Jo Moyer

Dan Compte has an interesting claim to fame; he’s been on every moving attraction at Walt Disney World in one day. That’s 46 attractions in four parks in 18 hours. Whew! Just think — that’s Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Test Track and Expedition Everest — all in one day.

To take advantage of the theme parks, Dan appreciates the excellent vacation time that is part of Valencia’s Total Rewards.

Speaking of Total Rewards, or all the benefits we receive as an employee, such as medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, flexible spending accounts or retirement plans — these are Dan’s expertise in his role as coordinator, Total Rewards. In fact, if you’ve ever called our Total Rewards team with benefits-related questions, you may have spoken with Dan, as he provides support to employees.

He also assists with coordinating the open enrollment process, eligibility reporting and vendor payments, working with third-party administrators to resolve any claim and eligibility issues, record keeping and ensuring compliance with federal, state and local regulations and statutes.

“Dan is truly an asset to the Total Rewards team,” complimented Tom Keller, director, benefits, Dan’s supervisor and featured colleague nominator. “He’s always ready for new challenges that will continue his learning and development in benefits and human resources. Dan has a passion to provide top-notch customer service and support to our employees throughout the year. I admire his work ethic and appreciate his support and contributions to the department.”

Dan’s favorite part of working at Valencia is all of the opportunities that are available as an employee. Dan joined the Valencia team in October 2011 as an organizational development intern. “That helped me to get to know everyone on the team and lead me to working at the front desk of the HR office,” he said.

“Four years later, I have worked my way up to my current position and been able to learn a lot along the way using my SPD [staff and program development] funds to earn a master’s degree and attend different conferences on the ever-changing landscape of total rewards,” he added.

He is especially proud of his work on Valencia’s 2016 open enrollment, which was an especially busy time as Valencia changed healthcare providers from Cigna to UnitedHealthcare.

“Picking your benefits can be a scary process to some and even scarier when moving to a new provider,” explained Dan. “And reaching all of our full-time employees is tough, because not all of them are sitting in front of the computer. To have a 99.7 percent completion rate with all of the changes was amazing. I am definitely proud to work with the great team in the benefits area and the organizational development and human resources team as a whole.”

Another of his favorite accomplishments was the redesign of HR InTouch to the BenefitFocus Portal, which is the system in Atlas that provides information regarding employee benefits, wellness and retirement. “Before, the site was not very user friendly, seemed ‘cookie cutter’ and did not fit the Valencia brand,” Dan shared. “Now, I definitely feel that the brand is met, and it is a lot easier to navigate to enroll in your benefits and find the necessary information.”

He has also enjoyed learning the ongoing and ever-changing details of the Affordable Care Act. “It’s something that always keeps you on your toes,” he said.

To Dan, Valencia signifies learning. “For our students, it is an opportunity to learn a field of study and better themselves,” he noted. “For our employees, we have a whole day dedicated to learning. Overall, there’s so much learning available that it takes two counties, about to be seven campuses, the School of Public Safety, the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center and a District Office to hold it all.”

Dan has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in Human Resource Management and will be graduating with a Master of Business Administration from the University of Central Florida in August. He is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and the Central Florida Compensation and Benefits Administration.

When Dan is not enjoying the area’s theme parks, he is cheering on the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Orlando Solar Bears, the Miami Heat, the Atlanta Braves and the UCF Knights.
