Featured Colleague: Danielle Silver Travels the World, Brings Global Perspective Into Her World

By Dani Moritz-Long

A world-traveler, New Student Orientation Coordinator Danielle Silver has found herself in an array of eye-opening, cultural experiences. From finding herself a minority in a room to not speaking the native language and surrendering her equality in places that deem women inferior to men, she’s been on incredible, life-changing journeys. These experiences have shaped her world view and allowed her to foster a deep appreciation for those transplanted into U.S. culture.

This, she explains, is something that serves her well — particularly in an environment like Valencia that welcomes students, faculty and staff from all corners of the globe.

“I love experiencing new cultures that put me out of my comfort zone; I think it helps me support more diverse populations of students,” she said. “I’m never completely going to understand where someone is coming from because you can never truly be in someone else’s shoes, but you can recognize what it might be like for them.”

As Danielle serves thousands of students each year (more than 4,000 last academic year alone), this is part of what makes her so successful in her role.

Her passion for people, of course, also plays a part.

Responsible for conducting New Student Orientations, which are crucial introductions for students new to college and/or new to Valencia, Danielle also leads a team of student leaders, who assist her with answering students’ questions, conducting tours and preparing to register.

“I love working with them,” Danielle said about the student leaders. “I love watching them grow and helping them to develop skills they might not develop outside of a student leadership position.”

In working with them and all of Valencia’s students, Danielle also employs more than 14 years of experience serving in higher education as well as her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in college student personnel.

Commenting on her success, Osceola Campus Director of Academic Advising John Britt said, “Danielle joined Valencia and the orientation team last year at the beginning of our peak time, a time that is challenging for the most experienced staff. However, Danielle continued to work hard to learn her role and did an excellent job in presenting, advising and scheduling the Osceola Campus orientations. Furthermore, she provides excellent leadership to our student leaders and has done a tremendous job in helping them grow professionally.”

Outside of work, when Danielle isn’t adding stamps to her passport, you’ll find her working toward her health and fitness goals and following in her family’s footsteps through tap dance. In fact, if you keep an eye out, you might just find her doing a jig behind her desk or tapping to the beat at a student orientation.

Know of someone who embodies one of Valencia’s Values (learning, people, diversity, access or integrity), who has been an employee for one year or more? Send the colleague’s name to us at The_Grove@valenciacollege.edu. He or she might be one of our featured colleagues, subject to supervisor’s approval.
