Featured Colleague – Darryl Pirmal

By Stephanie McMillen

Darryl Pirmal was born in Trinidad and Tobago, a small island in the Caribbean. He migrated to New York in December 1988 and since then has called the United States home. After graduating from high school in New York, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps to honorably serve his country for six years.

In June 2008, Darryl was hired to the security department at the Osceola Campus. Six months later he was transferred to the Sand Lake Center, where he became a full-time security officer. Although only fluent in English, Darryl was often seen conversing with the international students, making them laugh with his quirky personality. Language was never a barrier for Darryl and the students always enjoyed his enthusiasm and charisma.

After one year, Darryl was again transferred – this time to the Downtown Center –  where you can find him today. “This [transfer] was a great honor,” Darryl said, “because I was given the opportunity to be in direct contact with college administrators.”

You may know Darryl by his trademark friendly smile, warm greeting and professionalism as you walk into the entrance of the building. “I look forward to each morning when I take my post at the Downtown Center,” Darryl said.

Being a security officer at the eventful Downtown Center, Darryl had the opportunity to observe many of the remarkable members of the Valencia family. It was there that he “became truly inspired.” Darryl was happy to find himself in a place that had a commitment to community, with employees who were dedicated to students, and because of “the various personalities that surrounded me,” Darryl decided to earn his first college degree.

In two-and-a-half years, Darryl successfully completed all requirements for his A.A. degree with a membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. This spring, he will take to the graduation stage at Valencia’s commencement ceremony on May 5, and hopes to further his education at the University of Central Florida in the summer.

Darryl is currently enrolled in the 2011-2012 Leadership Academy, is a member of the conflict transformation/resolution group, a volunteer at Florida Hospital, and on the Peace and Justice Initiative Committee.  In 2011, Darryl initiated the first Blood Drive for the Downtown Center and has been a dedicated blood donor ever since. Last year, Darryl served as a team leader for the Learning Day service project at Moss Park, and will serve as a team leader again this year for a service project at the Base Camp Children’s Foundation.

In his free time, Darryl is a fish hobbyist. With the help of his family, Darryl designed and built a 3,000 gallon Koi pond in his backyard and is currently the secretary of the Central Florida Koi Club. In addition, he enjoys landscaping and takes great pride in his multiple exotic tropical fruit trees and plants.

“Valencia College has been a blessing to me and my family,” Darryl said. “My experiences with Valencia, both as an employee and as a student have been life altering – my experiences have taught me to be a life student.”
