Featured Colleague – Denise Ross

By Stephanie McMillen

Denise Ross, director for certification programs in information technology, says that she has felt welcome at Valencia since she first came here as a student in 1992.

“I am a product of Valencia and very proud of what I became with the help of [our] faculty and staff,” Denise said. “My colleagues say that I am ‘home grown’ since I have spent half of my life here at the college.”

As a student, Denise was involved in campus activities. In 1993 she started the first cultural club at the Osceola Campus, called the Osceola MultiCultural Association.

“As a club we enlivened our small campus with entertainment and showcased our countries,” Denise said. She later became the club advisor and continued working with other student clubs, such as the Caribbean Student Association and the “Sisters” mentoring group.

Denise enjoyed being on campus so much that she chose to volunteer in the computer lab and was offered a part-time position within the year. She shared that it was Dale Husbands, dean of business, information technology and social science at the Osceola Campus, who realized her potential.

Dale was Denise’s first instructor, eventually became her mentor, and was responsible for encouraging her to follow a career path that led to computers and teaching. “He used to say I was a natural when it came to learning technology and to this day, I am still a computer geek,” Denise said.

During her 19 years at Valencia, Denise has held three official positions: computer lab support specialist, instructional support supervisor, and director for certification programs in information technology.

Currently, in addition to her official job, Denise serves as the program chair for information technology and the campus ombudsperson, and she teaches computer classes as an adjunct instructor.

She is most proud of growing the Bridges to Success program at Osceola Campus. “During my 10 years of service to the Bridges to Success program I was the advisor, mentor, and a friend to over 100 students while handling my other duties as a director and instructor,” Denise said. “Sometimes it was a lot to handle but my motivation was the students.”

Being a part of a student’s success is “a great feeling,” Denise said. “Students are my priority and I am giving back to the Valencia student community what I received.”

Denise has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer information technology from Nova Southeastern University.

Her favorite quote is from Confucius, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Denise shared, “This quote says exactly how I feel about my job at Valencia.”
