Hilda Berry is known on the Osceola Campus as a dedicated employee who gives her all to beautify the campus for our students, employees and community. In her role as a custodian, Hilda goes above and beyond to exhibit our Valencia Values. In fact, Kimberly Foster, faculty, New Student Experience, nominated Hilda as a featured colleague for three Valencia Values: integrity, people and diversity.
“She is loved by everyone around her,” Kimberly explained. “Hilda works tirelessly to provide a safe, clean and inviting environment for students, faculty and staff members. She greets everyone with a smile and goes above and beyond to help whenever and wherever she is needed.”
Her supervisor agrees. “Hilda is an asset to the Custodial team because her positive and friendly attitude provides so much joy to anyone that she comes in contact with,” shared Amy Matson, custodial services supervisor. “She always has a smile upon her face and makes it a point to greet everyone that she encounters. She is always one of the first employees to volunteer to work extra time if needed and takes great pride in the work that she completes at the College.”
Hilda joined the Osceola Campus as a part-time custodian 18 years ago and became full time after four and a half years. This spring, Hilda will retire from this work that fulfilled her for so long. And her team is sorry to see her go. “I am savoring the time that we have left together before her retirement … it will be a difficult task to fill her shoes,” Amy said.
What has kept Hilda energized to provide such excellent service with a smile for 18 years? “The people I work with make the College a great place to work.” Hilda exclaimed. “I enjoy what I do, and Valencia is very much my second family.”
When not at work, Hilda loves to travel. A native of the Philippines, she enjoys traveling home to visit friends and family, yet that isn’t the only amazing destination she has visited.
“I have had the good fortune to travel to many exciting destinations such as France, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Russia and Spain,” she said. Last year, she and her husband, Doug, traveled to Switzerland, which included a memorable cable car ride to the top of Titlis Mountain. “The snow was so beautiful, and being on top of the mountain gave me a new perspective,” Hilda stated.
When not working or traveling, Hilda enjoys walking, Zumba and working in her back yard. “My husband thinks that I am the Energizer bunny,” she said. “I just keep going and going without running out of energy!”
