Featured Colleague – Javier Charriez

By Stephanie McMillen

Javier Charriez, instructional support supervisor for the Osceola Campus learning center, began his Valencia journey in 1995 as a student.

“Family” is the word that Javier uses when he talks about what it means to work at Valencia. “This is the place where I learned, where I grew, where I taught and mentored others, where I have built relationships that will last a lifetime,” he said. “It is the people that I work with [who] motivate me to do my best.”

During his second year of courses, Javier met Todd Ribardo, the Osceola lab manager at the time, who would eventually hire him as a work-study student. Javier was attracted to join the Valencia family through the conversations he had with Todd, “who took the time to answer the hundreds of questions that I had as a student, and later gave me the opportunity to explore some of those answers.”

He then spent the next five years working in various part-time positions before becoming a full-time employee at the college in 2000. Joining Valencia as an employee when Javier did was a unique and transformative time in his field of expertise.

“I like to say that I have seen the rise of the computer revolution during my employment at Valencia,” Javier explained. “When I started, we had one workstation that would connect to the Internet in the labs (the others were for offline use only).”

Now, there are nearly 400 lab computers at the Osceola Campus and a wide range of technology and equipment available for students and employees to access. “As an aficionado of all things high-tech, you can imagine how excited I am about where we are today,” Javier said with enthusiasm.

Valencia has been a place where Javier has had a tremendous amount of freedom to experiment with new ideas and projects. “Whether that means new hardware for a lab, new methods for automating a process, or ways of reducing downtime,” he said, “I’m lucky to have the leadership in place that allows for the creative process to truly happen.”

Javier is happily married to Jenny Charriez, director of employee development, and together they have a 4-year-old son named Ilan. He is determined to ensure that his son is well versed in all things, “the high-tech and the not so high-tech,” Javier declares. However, he adds, that the following are required in his program of study – Linux/Unix and music. “Then again,” he said jokingly, “he’s only four, so I’ve got some time.”

As he continues giving back to the college that gave him so much – an education, confidence in his abilities, and the opportunity to meet his wife – Javier says that his main professional goals are to “make sure that the work I do matters, and that I inspire my peers to also believe in the integral part that they play in support of learning.”
