“Working at Valencia for the past 18 months has been an incredible experience. I was drawn by Valencia College’s reputation for the impact that it has on its students and in the community,” said Joanna Victoria. “However, I have been most impressed by the effect that it has on its employees. The sense of community created in such a diverse environment is to admire.”

Joanna onboarded in January 2014 as a records document management systems specialist, where she was part of the human resources imaging team. Under the direction of Adam Carneiro, managing director, human resources information services, she worked with her peers to convert all employee paper files to electronic documents.

“Being able to participate in the creation of such a process and to see how successful the project is right now, demonstrates the importance of collaboration in the workplace,” she said.

Adriana Sanchez, records document management systems specialist, was part of the team and worked on the critical project to convert the records digitally.

“Joanna is a great collaborator who is excited about every aspect of her job and a hard-working individual,” said Adriana. “She’s also a great trainer and her dedication to the job exceeds all expectations.”

In May 2015, Joanna transitioned to her new role as human resources specialist in the compliance office where she processes workers’ compensation and unemployment claims, as well as Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requests.

“The environment that Valencia College has created promotes and inspires people to, not only achieve their goals, but to encourage others,” she said. “The stories I read in The Juice of people sharing their individual successes really impacts me. You can see people at all levels of the College trying to improve themselves, and it shows you that you are in a community of people who have the same goals.”

Joanna also believes that the open communication she experiences fosters trust in her work relationships and promotes a positive work experience, which ultimately contributes to student success.

“More than anything, Valencia College signifies opportunity!” she said. “Its commitment to learning has given an invitation to all learners to achieve their goals. It has given opportunities to members of our community who otherwise would hot have even considered an education. And most importantly, through its values, Valencia promotes an environment of civic responsibility and personal ethics.”

Just last month, Joanna graduated from the Central Florida Partnership Leadership Orlando program. She is currently preparing for her Professional in Human Resources certification which, upon completion, will demonstrate mastery of the technical and operational aspects of human resources practices, as she hopes to grow her career in the field.

Joanna has a Master’s in Science degree in management with a concentration in human resources from the University of Central Florida and a Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational communication from Rollins College.
