Featured Colleague – Leda Pacheco

By Stephanie McMillen

When explaining her role at Valencia, Leda Pacheco, coordinator of employee development, said, “My job is all about celebrating, recognizing and developing the college’s most valuable resource – our employees.”

Originally from Colombia, Leda moved to the United States in 2001 after earning a bachelor’s degree in organizational psychology from the Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga.

She first began her career at Valencia in 2004 as a Spanish instructor for Continuing Education (formerly Valencia Enterprises). Then in 2005, Leda was hired as the coordinator of conferencing and events.  She attributes this opportunity to Chara Young, director of organizational communication.

“Chara gave me the opportunity to join Valencia as a full-time employee,” Leda shared. “She believed in me, inspired me and challenged me to become a better professional.”

One of Leda’s greatest career opportunities came when she was invited to join the team of eight who formed the office for organizational development (now organizational communication and development) in 2010. This, Leda explained, “has been the best professional experience of my life.”

Today, Leda works with a team of 23, who she described as being comprised of “passionate” individuals. “I am part of a team that encourages creativity, innovation and growth; which can be challenging sometimes, but a very rewarding experience,” she said.

In this position Leda works quietly, yet efficiently with departments across the college to create and improve upon various programs. From supporting the sabbatical leave committee and coordinating the Roueche and NISOD Excellence Awards, to helping plan Learning Day and facilitating programs for the Valencia EDGE, Leda is considered an invaluable member by her team.

“I’m blessed with an incredible team, and Leda is a perfect example of that,” said Jenny Charriez, director of employee development and Leda’s supervisor. “Responsible and caring, she always finds a way to improve our collective work by bringing a unique perspective into every project and team she joins. The Valencia family is lucky to have her.”

As someone whose personal goals are to continue learning, growing and developing herself as a professional, Leda is delighted to support employees in their own learning and development journey.

“I love learning about our employees’ initiatives, their accomplishments, and their contributions to the college,” she said.

Outside of work, Leda enjoys spending time with her husband, Andrés, and her two-year-old daughter, Natalia. “I also love dancing salsa, eating Colombian food, exercising and traveling,” she said.
