Featured Colleague: Liza Schellpfeffer’s Passion for People

By Dani Moritz-Long

When we asked Speech Professor Liza Schellpfeffer what she loves about working at Valencia, her answer was simple, yet powerful. “Amazing people,” she said, “Amazing people supporting, teaching and learning.”

People — Valencia’s students, staff and faculty — she explained are what brought her to Valencia 10 years ago, and they’re what’s kept her here ever since.

“The best thing about working at Valencia is the relationships I build every day with colleagues,” she said, but her relationship with students, of course, are also a major part of her passion for the job.

Inspired by Valencia students’ perseverance, she’s thoroughly enjoyed meeting new faces, helping students overcome challenges, teaching and learning.

“In my 10-plus years at Valencia, there are hundreds of students who have been a part of my class community and, during that time, I’ve been proud of the learning I’ve shared with them and the lessons they shared with me. They have influenced the educator I am today.”

At the College, Liza, who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and broadcasting and a master’s degree in communication, also enjoys contributing to special projects focused on topics like Valencia’s Strategic Impact Planonline learning and the implementation of Valencia’s new Learning Management System, Canvas.

Commenting on Liza’s talents as an educator and collaborator, Communications Dean Linda Neal said, “Liza is a natural leader who authentically demonstrates the kind of soft skills many of us only wish we had. She’s an innovative thinker whose contribution to Valencia is beyond measure.”

Outside of Valencia, Liza is just as an active. While she once enjoyed can-can dancing, she now spends her time traveling, doing DIY projects, gardening, participating in retail therapy and finding peace through a mindful yoga class.
