Undria Stalling, Valencia’s only internal auditor, says that her colleagues frequently ask her what she does at Valencia. She clarifies that she is an employee of the College, but functionally reports directly to the District Board of Trustees – and she is 100 percent vested in the success of the College.

Undria is the Compliance and Auditing department (a department of one) located on the West Campus. “I have access to review all areas of the College,” she explains.

“In a nutshell, my role is to ensure that departmental and operational functions, processes and programs are achieving expected outcomes; that risk related to these activities are properly mitigated to a level acceptable to the institution; that internal controls are sufficient and in place; that governance processes are effective, i.e., College policy; and that the College is adhering to statutory and federal regulations.”

Patti Riva, operations manager for the Energy Education Program, recommended Undria as someone to highlight as a featured colleague, in part because employees may not understand or be aware of her role at the College.

“I work down the hall from her, and she is always immersed in material – reviewing, checking and composing this information, and I thought it would be very interesting to highlight what Undria does for the College. We all have a story to tell, and I wanted to know more about the work she does – I think it’s interesting,” Patti expresses.

Prior to joining Valencia in 2004, she worked as an internal auditor for Trustmark National Bank, Mississippi Baptist Health Systems and Jackson State University. She is a certified internal auditor and certified fraud examiner with more than 18 years of experience.

Auditing may not seem like a people-focused role from the outside, but Undria shares that one aspect about her job that she loves is the opportunity to meet different people at the College. She enjoys learning about various operations and programs in different departments, and she has the unique opportunity to see how it all fits together.

“This position offers a holistic perspective of the College. I have never had a dull moment since my arrival at Valencia. Yes, some days have been challenging, but that just makes things all the more interesting. I also am grateful to have an institution, administration and Board that does support my position. This level of support is vital to having an effective internal audit function.”

To support her work, Undria is a member of numerous professional organizations. Currently, she is serving as vice president of membership for the Central Florida Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors, an organization with more than 150 thousand members worldwide and 500 members in Central Florida. She is also a member of the Association of College and University Auditors, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics.

A native of Mississippi, Undria earned her associate degree at Southwest Mississippi Community College, and she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Southern Mississippi with a major in accounting. In 2012, Undria earned her master’s degree in business administration from Columbia College. She admits that completing the program took longer than she had expected, but she did it debt-free. “I am extremely proud of the fact that I did not have to incur any debt to achieve this personal and professional goal. Valencia’s tuition reimbursement program along with personal savings allowed me the opportunity to make this dream a reality.”

Outside of work, Undria enjoys collecting cookbooks and cooking, singing and listening to different types of music, spending time with her family and reading inspirational and motivational materials.

What a treat to have happened on this wonderful article that clearly I previously missed. Delighted to see that others are also aware of the valuable service and the very hard work you do on behalf of all of the college's compliance requires. Thanks for a job well done.
