Founder of Peace Studies at Valencia Honored with Tree Dedication

On Thursday, November 15, the Peace and Justice Initiative honored Penny Villegas, founder of peace studies at Valencia, with a tree dedication ceremony on East Campus.

To celebrate her 30 years of dedication to Valencia, and specifically her role as the “Mother of Peace Studies” at the college, students, employees, and members of the community came together at this event to honor her through poetry, letters, words and song.

With the assistance of Grounds Maintenance Supervisor Clarence Canada, a Magnolia tree was planted near the tree line behind Building 4 as a reminder of peace and justice and the legacy of Professor Emeritus Penny Villegas.

If you wish to thank Penny for her contributions to the Valencia learning community, please do so by leaving a comment below.

I'm sorry that I was unable to attend the tree dedication ceremony. It sounds like it was a great event and a great legacy to leave behind. I will check on the tree periodically. I think that you have done amazing work at the college in the name of PEACE. It is an honor to call call you a colleague. I wish you the very best for the next act of your life. Be well, Ralph
