Get to Know Your Campus CSA – Criminal Justice Institute

Over the next several weeks, you will see a series of articles designed to help you get to know your campus Career Staff Association (CSA). This week, we present the CSA at the Criminal Justice Institute (CJI), which is chaired by Bobbi Willoughby, human resources specialist.

Bobbi sees the CSA as “a great way to network with other employees – not just with those in your immediate work environment but those on other campuses also.”

Bobbi was asked to be the chair of the CSA at CJI after her first year of employment at Valencia in 2010. “I was naturally reluctant at first because I was still so new to the college, Bobbi admitted. “I thought about it and decided it would be a good way for me to get to know other departments and campuses.”

As chair, her goal is to “get as close to 100% participation as possible,” she said. “I want to try to get [CJI] career staff employees motivated to get involved.”

Not only does the CSA at CJI address career staff concerns, but Bobbi has also coordinated several community volunteer activities for members. Over the past year, for example, the CSA at CJI has visited the Palm Garden of Orlando Nursing Home several times during the holidays (such as Easter, Independence Day, and Christmas) to spend time with residents.

“I feel like we have developed a special relationship with the residents of Palm Garden,” Bobbi said.  “They are always so enthusiastic when we visit and it makes the time we spend with them very rewarding.”

Recently Bobbi coordinated a self-defense demonstration with CJI Coordinator Steve Kelley, who equipped participants with the knowledge and skills needed to defend yourself when encountering a threatening person. This activity, Bobbi said, “was a blast.” It was informative and participants “had fun” learning how to protect themselves.

If you are interested in joining the CSA at CJI, please contact Bobbi Willoughby at or at extension 8038.

The Career Staff Association goals are:

  • To address employee concerns.
  • To provide staff development opportunities.
  • To provide community outreach opportunities.
  • To raise awareness about the Career Staff Association and its benefits.

The Career Staff Association is hosting an Ice Cream Social on Friday, October 12 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the West Campus Special Events Center. All full-time career staff employees are invited to attend.
