Get to Know Your Campus CSA- Downtown Center

The Career Staff Association (CSA) is a college-wide organization that provides a platform for career service staff members to engage in career development opportunities, community outreach projects, and a variety of other activities that serve to enrich the employment experience and enhance the relationship of career service employees with the college, and with each other.

In this article, the second in a series designed to help you get to know your campus Career Staff Association,  we present the CSA at the Downtown Center (DTC), chaired by Janice Wood, administrative assistant for assessment and institutional effectiveness.

Janice says she loves “helping others be the best they can at their job,” which is partly what inspired her to become the chair of the CSA at the DTC shortly after starting at Valencia in February 2011.

While her goals are many, creating a sense of community among all DTC employees, at all levels, tops her list.

“I am hoping to create an atmosphere where the career staff employees know they have a voice, make sure they feel informed and aware of what goes on at the college, have a place to address their concerns, as well as know they are valued at the college,” Janice explained.

Under Janice’s leadership, members have been able to give back to the Central Florida community and participate in activities to improve their own personal and professional well-being.

Together, members of the CSA at the DTC have cooked dinner at the Ronald McDonald House and collected supplies that were donated to A Gift for Teaching. Janice has organized pot luck lunches and arranged to bring workshops to the DTC, including topics such as nutrition, self-defense, PDP planning, and much more.

“I hope that people will join our campus organization because we all bring talent, voice and skill to the group,” Janice said. “That voice is important. What you have to say and contribute does matter. In addition, I hope you get involved because anything accomplished by one person is accomplished on a greater scale by a group of people.”

If you are interested in joining the CSA at the DTC, please contact Janice Wood at or at extension 3467.

The Career Staff Association goals are:

  • To address employee concerns.
  • To provide staff development opportunities.
  • To provide community outreach opportunities.
  • To raise awareness about the Career Staff Association and its benefits.

The Career Staff Association is hosting an Ice Cream Social on Friday, October 12 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the West Campus Special Events Center. All full-time career staff employees are invited to attend.
