Getting Through This Together With Trust

Tuesday, May 12, 2020

In a follow up to their conversation in March, Valencia College President Sandy Shugart and Faculty Association President Stanton Reed came together again (with Lysol wipes on the ready) to have an open and honest discussion about how the College has fared through transitioning to online instruction, our new state of teaching and learning through crisis, collaborating in a new normal and our current best view for how we will move forward with efforts to reopen.

Trust in each other and our leadership will be key to navigating steadily through these times, a sentiment expressed by both Sandy and Stanton. Dr. Shugart ended the discussion with a timely poem by David Whyte titled, “Everything is Waiting for You,” about hope when you feel alone.

Tune in to watch the conversation. Organized by topic, the videos below provide insight on summer enrollment, guiding principles for assigning course loads, budget, operational plans and more.

Topic 1: How Are We Faring?
Topic 2: State of Summer
Topic 3: Budget Expectations
Topic 4: Course Load Assignments
Topic 5: Reopening and Collaboration in the New Normal
Topic 6: Trust and Hope Moving Forward

As for the rule guiding what’s ahead, Dr. Shugart reminds us, “we’re all in this together.”

    Dr. Shugart,

There is so much uncertainty in this time, but having such great leaders as Valencia College has makes the difference.

Thank you for your continuous communication and the messages of trust and hope!

Would you mind sharing such beautiful poem?

    Very Respectfully,

Excellent conversation and information from both of you! Thank you Stanton and Dr. Shugart for your wisdom, calming words and inspiration to us front line staff 🙂 Knowing your expectations and vision during this time has been passed down to leadership gives me comfort as we work to define the new normal as staff and as we help our students navigate these uncertain times.
