A Special Message from Tracey Stockwell, Board Chair, Valencia College District Board of Trustees and Kathleen Plinske, Executive Vice President and Provost
Since College President Sandy Shugart announced his retirement, we have all had many opportunities to reflect on the impact of his leadership and the legacy of his work. As we approach the transition of leadership and the end of his 21-year tenure as Valencia’s fourth president, we do so with appreciation, admiration, and a deep sense of gratitude for the important ways in which the College changed and developed with Sandy at the helm.
In recognizing the significance of this moment and the many ways in which we wish to share our thanks, it seems fitting that the District Board of Trustees would bestow upon Sandy the honorific title of President Emeritus. The title signifies both the impact of his leadership and the bond between Valencia and our fourth president, which will endure.
In addition, many of us know Sandy as a “renaissance man,” a poet, singer/songwriter, guitar-playing higher education expert, scholar, and leader. As such, his impact on the arts and music at Valencia and in the Central Florida community will live on after his retirement. To honor his unique contributions to both Valencia and to the arts, the District Board of Trustees also named the School of Arts and Entertainment building on our East Campus as the Sanford C. Shugart building.
During our meeting this morning, the board passed a resolution designating Sandy as honorary President Emeritus and the official naming of the Sanford C. Shugart building. In sharing our well wishes for a healthy and prosperous retirement with him, as the board chair and on behalf of Valencia’s District Board of Trustees, I expressed the following: We wish you the very best in your continued journey of service. We wish you the best for your family. We wish you quiet times to write and warm fires in front of which to play music. We wish you Godspeed and comfort in knowing that you gave it all at Valencia.
We know you will join us in celebrating Sandy’s 21 years of leadership and wishing him the very best in the days and weeks to come.
