Inaugural Academy for Learning Leadership a Success

Congratulations to the graduates of Valencia’s first Academy for Learning Leadership (A.L.L.)! The graduation, held on June 21 at the West Campus Collaborative Design Center, followed ten months of leadership development through face-to-face sessions that were supplemented with Valencia EDGE workshops. The academy was attended by new employee leaders (and those who are aspiring to academic leadership positions) from all campuses. The program began last year in September.

Academy members had the opportunity to immerse themselves into Valencia’s leadership culture by learning about topics vital to Valencia’s success. Sessions focused on areas such as, assessment and enrollment planning, strategic planning and how to navigate crucial conversations.

Performances at the 2013 graduation included singing, drama and thoughtful presentations about the gainful leadership knowledge acquired throughout the experience.

A.L.L. was designed after recent re-organizations resulted in approximately half of the college’s learning leadership being new to Valencia or to a leadership role. The outcomes and focus for A.L.L. are based on a review by an academic leadership development expert, a survey of conversations with current leaders, our five supervisor competencies and academic research.

The Academy strives to keep up the pace with the College’s growth by expanding our leadership team in all departments. A collaborative process among the campus presidents and vice presidents selects participants.

Next year’s academy is scheduled to begin on September 19, and will be launched with a new name – PIVOT 360. More information on the PIVOT leadership programs will be available in the coming weeks.

    I've been a program director for several years and there were several times I'd find myself wondering how I was supposed to 'just know' how to do a particular task in that role. This FD was the missing training program I'd been inwardly begging for. I highly recommend it for anyone involved in faculty governance or in a leadership role in your program or division.

    In addition to the training, it's a bonding experience that connects you to college colleagues you wouldn't normally get to meet in the normal course of your work.

    This was simply the best experience in professional development I have ever had. As a "new employee leader" it was integral to giving me exposure to what Valencia is all about and college colleagues as Robert mentioned. The resources I now have from this experience would have taken me years to accrue, where in this training it was a year and in some cases even less.
