Valencia is full of great people, who have fantastic stories and tremendous achievements. Today, I’m so pleased to announce that our own Dr. James May, professor of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) on the East Campus, has been named the 2011 Florida Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This honor is a testament to James’ stellar work with students and colleagues, and particularly, his commitment to advancing the craft of teaching. The U.S. Professors of the Year is the only national award that recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
A veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese linguist, James joined Valencia in 2001 as a tenure-track professor in EAP. He is a bona fide Florida Gator with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish literature, a master’s degree in English for speakers of other languages, and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Florida. James has participated in all that Valencia has to offer its faculty members, including Destinations, Endowed Chairs, NISOD, and more. A frequent conference presenter, he prepared a video and co-presented with one of his students about engaging today’s students. When asked about his favorite moment at Valencia, James replied, “I just love what I do, whether it’s entertaining and sharing ideas with students or staying after class to chat with students about their life plans.”
Today, the awards are being publicly announced at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. and through the national and local news media. The video news release (see above) is being distributed to local media by our marketing and strategic communications team, and you will see congratulatory announcements next week in the Orlando Sentinel and the Orlando Business Journal. If you’d like to know more about the U. S. Professors of the Year program, visit http://www.usprofessorsoftheyear.org.
Please help us celebrate with James when he returns from receiving his award in Washington, D.C. (and after the Thanksgiving break). The East Campus Communications Department, led by Dean Della Paul, is hosting a reception for him on Tuesday, November 29 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the atrium of Building 3. We hope you will come enjoy some light refreshments and congratulate our colleague on a job well done. Please RSVP by Monday, November 21 to email@example.com or at extension 5450.
I look forward to having you all join me in congratulating James on this well-deserved recognition.
