“Let Us Entertain You” Event Raises Scholarships for Nursing Department Students

Congratulations to Michelle Matis, who was named the 2015 Femmes de Coeur Let Us Entertain You winner!

Since 2008, the Valencia College of Nursing has jointly participated in a fundraiser, “Let Us Entertain You (LUEY)” — sponsored by Femmes de Coeur — with Seminole State College, University of Central Florida and Adventist University of Health Sciences. The annual event is very much like the popular “Dancing with the Stars,” and Valencia has won the contest six out of seven times.

This year’s event was held on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at The Ballroom at Church Street. Valencia colleagues who have competed over the years and were given 20-plus hours of dancing lessons (on their own time) were Michelle Matis, Valencia Foundation vice president and chief operating officer, who performed this year; Celena Lue, manager, student services and outreach; Bob Gessner, dean of science; Paula Pritchard, former nursing school dean, Manny Ramos, professor of nursing; Mike Bosley, executive dean, Lake Nona Campus; and Dean Maguire, spouse of Raymer Maguire III, Valencia College trustee.

West Campus Bookstore also participated by providing text books for a raffle, and nursing students helped with fundraising efforts.

“Everything we do is truly because we want to see the students be successful and also wear those two initials — RN — behind their names,” said Professor of Nursing Cathie Hansen. Cathie served as the LUEY coordinator for the Valencia Nursing Program and planned and hosted meetings, solicited vendors, coordinated logistics and promoted student volunteers. “I personally would like to thank all who have been involved in making this event a success since 2008,” she said.

Proceeds from the event are shared equally by the four schools.

Femmes de Coeur (Women of Heart) is an Orlando based, not-for-profit volunteer organization comprised of a unique group of community women volunteering time and sharing a common goal to serve the needs of the community.

Lifework Leadership Honors Leonard Bass

A message from Stacey Johnson, President, East & Winter Park Campuses

Leadership and a heart for service provided the foundation for East Campus Dean of Learning Support Leonard Bass, to garner accolades and be honored as a community leader by Lifework Leadership.

On Thursday, May 14, 2015, Leonard was honored by the faith-based organization that is dedicated to building leaders from diverse vocational, denominational and racial backgrounds in the city of Orlando.

Bass noted, “my participation in the program has been very beneficial personally and professionally. I have learned much about effective leadership principles and practices, and I have grown as a person. I would strongly encourage other Valencia staff to participate in this fine program.”

Each year, approximately 20 participants, who possess a mission to continue their personal, organizational and communal growth, are enrolled in the program. Recently, West Campus President Falecia Williams received the Lifework Leadership Alumni of the Year award.
