East Campus VITA Program Contributes to Another Successful Tax Season

A Message from Stacey Johnson, President, East and Winter Park Campuses

With tax season behind us, it’s time to thank those who contributed to Valencia’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Many thanks not only to Professor of Business Walter Martin, but also to the VITA program student and faculty volunteers. Once again, hundreds of community residents were provided free assistance in preparing their taxes from February through April on various campuses. As always, preference was given to senior citizens, the disabled and low-income individuals.

Stability Initiatives Manager for Heart of United Way David Foote said, “Valencia East’s VITA tax season was another big success. Valencia was again the number one free tax preparation site in Central Florida. Walter Martin and his team do so much for the community and the smiles on clients’ faces were priceless.”

Daniel Barkowitz Earns Top Influencer Award

Kudos to Assistant Vice President of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Daniel Barkowitz on earning the Top Influencer Award from the Florida College Access Network (FCAN), an organization dedicated to improving educational achievement for all Florida residents.

Daniel was presented the award, which recognizes his social savvy and contributions to expanding the summit’s reach and attendance, during the annual FCAN summit, held Thursday, May 10 and Friday, May 11, 2018.

Commenting on why Daniel received the award, FCAN Assistant Director for Network Partnerships Kathy McDonald explained, “Our summit is only as strong as the people we attract who bring their talents and experience in service to helping each of us learn and grow. No one of us have this all figured out. Together, we can make amazing things happen. That’s why Daniel’s contribution … in helping us spread the word not only about the summit, but about the work and those leaders who are blazing new trails, is so important.”
