A Message from Wendy Givoglu, Interim President, East and Winter Park Campuses

The shift to remote operations, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, left colleges scrambling to serve students and provide them with access to the variety of online resources necessary for student access and success. The Virtual 71st Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) Annual Meeting and Conference took place from Monday, November 16 – Friday, November 20, 2020, and asked the question, “How can the Florida College System meet these new challenges while maintaining excellence, access and student engagement during this most historic time?”

Twenty-eight Florida colleges participated in the conference with various sessions discussing topics such as equity, diversity and inclusion, workforce training, food insecurities, online learning and the digital divide.

Three Florida institutions shared how they implemented a variety of digital systems during a panel discussion on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. Student Services Manager Lauren Zanders participated in the panel discussion along with representatives from Santa Fe College in Gainesville and College of Central Florida in Ocala. Lauren shared how Valencia College is serving students virtually by highlighting various collegewide efforts including virtual offices, calling campaigns and wrap-around services such as the student laptop program, increased BayCare visits and application fee waivers.

Thank you, Lauren, for sharing your expertise!
