College administrators spent time gaining a deeper understanding of the Graduation and Career Credentials goal areas of the Strategic Impact Plan during the Valencia College Leadership Forum on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Focused conversations explored ways leadership can support the College in accomplishing the goals identified for these areas through the lens of equity.
An overview of the key points of the article “An Anti-deficit Achievement Framework for Research on Students of Color in STEM” was provided as a framework for breakout sessions to discuss the benefits of an anti-deficit approach to goal achievement. Conversations centered around how the anti-deficit approach could be advantageous to increasing Black male achievement by amplifying the factors that contribute to minority success instead of focusing on minority student failure and deficits.
