A Message from Kathleen Plinske, President, Osceola, Lake Nona, and Poinciana Campuses

The Psychology department at Osceola Campus, in conjunction with UCF Connect – Valencia Osceola, the Peace and Justice Institute (PJI) and the Valencia Counseling Center, is hosting Psychology Movie Night on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, from 4 – 6:30 p.m. in the Osceola Campus, Auditorium (Building 1, Room 100).

We will view “Changing Our Minds: The Story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker,” an inspiring movie that illustrates one way in which psychology has made the world a better place. Dr. Hooker was an American psychologist whose work revolutionized the way the mental health community views same-sex relationships. In the 1950s, it was illegal to be gay in the United States, and homosexuality was considered a form of mental illness. Dr. Hooker’s fascinating research with LGBT+ individuals showed that these prevailing views had no basis in scientific fact. Her work resulted in sweeping changes in mental health ethics, diagnoses and treatment, including the eventual removal of homosexuality as a mental health disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

An RSVP is not mandatory but is recommended so we know expected numbers of students; To RSVP, click here. (Please note that only students with a valid Valencia College or UCF ID will be able to participate.)

Popcorn will be provided. Also, come for the movie and stay for the conversation; a panel of psychology faculty and PJI staff will conduct a debriefing after the movie.

Please encourage your students to attend.
