Making a Difference in Our Community: Kyle Snavely Spotlights Student Films

A passionate educator at both the high school and college level, Instructional Lab Supervisor Kyle Snavely wanted to find an opportunity for his film students to shine. When he couldn’t find exactly what he was looking for, he decided to create a project of his own — now known as STARTFEST, short for Student Art Festival.

Six years later, his non-profit film festival is still thriving.

Each year, the festival features films like animated shorts and documentaries from high school and college students — giving film students a unique chance to shine and see their work on the big screen.

“I love interacting with the students at the festival,” Kyle said. “They are so excited to see their movies on the big screen!”

This year, STARTFEST is partnering with four other film festivals to feature student work in the First Annual 2017 Best of Film Fest and Job Fair, which is being hosted this weekend on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Wyndham Orlando Resort.

Throughout Valencia’s 50th anniversary year, to celebrate the College’s service to our community, we will feature stories of Valencia’s community impact and the volunteer efforts of our colleagues. Whether you volunteer as a board member of a foundation or you serve meals to the homeless, we want to hear about it because every act of kindness is worth celebrating. To submit a Valencia volunteer story, simply email the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your photo (preferably of you volunteering)
  • Where you volunteer and a description of the organization
  • How long you have volunteered with that organization
  • Why you choose to volunteer with that organization
  • What you enjoy most about volunteering with that organization

Kyle – I'm so happy that STARTFEST is a success. And what a great partnership you've built. I can't believe it's been six years since the beginning, probably seven since our board meetings at Stardust. I hope the event his weekend is amazing.
