Making a Difference in Our Community: Students and Faculty Clean up Wekiwa Springs

Proudly clad in Valencia Volunteers T-shirts, approximately 50 Valencia faculty and students took to Wekiwa Springs State Park on Friday, February 24, 2017, to help clean up the popular park, located at the picturesque headwaters of the Wekiva River. The effort enabled the students to reconnect with nature while giving back to the Central Florida community.

Specifically, the participants worked together to clear out debris from the parking areas and trim bushes and trees overlapping the parking lots  — making the highly trafficked areas both cleaner and safer for visitors of the park.

Commenting on the experience, Work Study Student and Student Leader Ashley Shaw said, “It was a great experience and we hope to have more opportunities like this one!”

This is just one example of the many Valencia Volunteer opportunities hosted through the year. If you want to get involved in future opportunities, find more information about Valencia’s resident do-gooders by clicking here.

Throughout Valencia’s 50th anniversary year, to celebrate the College’s service to our community, we will feature stories of Valencia’s community impact and the volunteer efforts of our colleagues. Whether you volunteer as a board member of a foundation or you serve meals to the homeless, we want to hear about it because every act of kindness is worth celebrating.
