Minority Male Symposium a Definite Success

A Message from Kathleen Plinske, President, Osceola, Lake Nona, and Poinciana Campuses

From Monday, February 25 – Thursday, February 28, 2019, counselors collegewide hosted the first Minority Male Symposium. At Osceola Campus, during the four days, students, faculty and staff were able to participate in a variety of events, starting with a carnival-themed celebration of diversity and success, followed by a panel highlighting the journey of four minority males, then a conversation with three local minority entrepreneurs and finally a keynote from a Valencia College alumnus who talked about overcoming adversity and finding the path to success.

Total attendance for the four days was around 300 participants.

The success of the event was a result of exceptional support from multiple departments, such as Advising, Student Development, Facilities, Valencia Foundation, Bridges to Success and Financial Aid. The student feedback for the events was also very favorable. Due to the success of this series, counselors will plan future spring events focusing on specific populations and facilitating courageous conversations.
