On Monday, May 14, Mr. Pin Man – our RecycleMania waste minimization trophy – arrived from North Lake College in Irving, Texas.
“He came in on a south-bound freight train,” said Jerry Cochran, our recycling coordinator. “After Rodney Taylor and David Lawrence helped Mr. Pin Man out of his shipping container, the first thing he wanted was a hot bath to get the Texas dust off of him.”
North Lake College has won first place in the waste minimization category for the last four years, and as a result, have had Mr. Pin Man in their possession for a long time. Watch the video below of North Lake College saying “goodbye” to Mr. Pin Man, which features Christa Slejko, interim president of North Lake College.
Speaking on behalf of Mr. Pin Man, Jerry said, “He has been itching to come to sunny Florida for the past four years, and is ready and willing to be displayed throughout the Valencia community in honor of our [win].”
RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs in North America and Canada. Over an eight-week period, campuses compete in various categories – the waste minimization category being the most important to Valencia. In this category, colleges compete to see who can produce the least amount of both recyclables and trash on a per person basis.
In an email to his counterpart at North Lake College, Jerry said, “The efforts of both of our colleges during the next RecycleMania in 2013 could really make an impact on our environment. I look forward to the stiff competition that [you] will provide.”
Jerry foresees the possibility of Mr. Pin Man traveling back and forth between Valencia and North Lake College, but cautioned, “Not that we are going to give him up that easily.”
