Newly Renamed Valencia United LGBT+ Scholarship Exceeds Donation Goal

As the one-year anniversary of the Pulse tragedy approaches, the Central Florida community continues to honor the memory of those lost and survivors. Through a memorial scholarship — formerly named the Valencia Foundation Pulse Memorial LGBT Scholarship — the Valencia United LGBT+ Scholarship and Valencia are contributing to that healing process.

Thanks to Valencia employees and students, community partners, and foundation board members, more than $34,000 has been raised to endow the scholarship.  Donations will continue to be accepted to build the scholarship and award more students each year.

Through this scholarship, Valencia will help to financially support students who contribute to the welcoming climate of all Valencia students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. The scholarship will also serve as a tribute to the 49 people, including 7 Valencia students, who were lost too soon when a shooter opened fire on the Pulse Nightclub on Sunday, June 12, 2016.

Valencia College Foundation and the Valencia Faculty and Staff Giving Committee thank everyone who has donated to this scholarship and found ways to help our community move forward. If you would like to donate to the scholarship, click here.

Good question Leah! The original name was Valencia Pulse Memorial LGBT+ Scholarship. The Valencia Faculty and Staff Giving Committee chose the new name of Valencia United LGBT+ Scholarship to avoid name confusion and support the work of the onePULSE Foundation as it works to create a PULSE Memorial at the PULSE Nightclub tragedy site

What were the names of the 7 Valencia Students who were murdered at Pulse and where can someone read about them (i.e., their biographies or obituaries)?
