Security Officer Charles Williams Receives Commendation from Orange County Sheriff

charles-williams-cert-groveHeroes are among us.

Congratulations to Charles Williams, security officer, who was awarded a “Certificate of Commendation for Excellence” from Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings on Tuesday, August 12, 2014.

Charles received the commendation for coming to the aid of a female deputy who was attempting to apprehend a suspect at an off-campus site. Charles’ quick thinking, when an intoxicated guest was being escorted from one of Orlando’s most popular resorts, averted a physical confrontation that might have otherwise gotten out of hand.

Charles, a 20-year public safety veteran and three-year Valencia employee, says what he did was “reflexive.”

“I wasn’t looking for anything but was simply doing what I’ve been trained to do. It was nice to receive the recognition for being able to help.”

Cathy Campbell Earns Workforce Education Industry Certification

cathy-campbell-270wCathy Campbell, career and workforce education specialist, completed Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI) analyst certification on Wednesday, September 3, 2014.

“The training validated the skill sets I’ve acquired over the 20 years in career and workforce development at Valencia,” Cathy shared.

Cathy notes that most of her work is in occupational research and documenting employment demand for students in the College’s current programs and in program development for Associate in Science degrees, technical and career certificates and baccalaureate degrees that assure adequate opportunities for the success of Valencia students.

“New tools and ways of using the data housed in EMSI Analyst are being developed regularly, and with the recent emphasis on filling STEM workforce needs in our region, we have used EMSI to determine the STEM disciplines that are highest in our region.”

Obtaining the EMSI analyst certification establishes that Cathy has a firm context of validated economic, employment, demographic, geographic and academic knowledge related to Valencia’s student success.

“This is a key piece of Career and Workforce Education teamwork of assuring that students have successful outcomes, and it also happens to be the completion of the first of my performance goals for this year — prior to the anticipated completion date.”

Congratulations to Brian Macon!

Brian has served as a PTK advisor at both the West and Lake Nona Campuses.
