Outgoing Faculty Fellow Erin O’Brien Leaves Mark of Excellence — Faculty Highlight

erin-obrien-groveHaving established an excellent rapport with faculty beginning their online work, as well as maintaining relationships with established faculty throughout Valencia, it takes a special and multi-faceted person to accomplish all of this work, and Erin O’Brien has completed it with a positive attitude and a willingness to go the extra mile for everyone she encounters.

By Page Jerzak, Associate Director, Online Teaching/Learning

Erin O’Brien, the 2014 – 2015 Faculty Fellow for Online Teaching and Learning, has had a long and wonderful relationship with Valencia. She attended classes here, taught as English faculty, moved to Virginia, returned to Valencia to teach again and then began her work as a Faculty Fellow within Faculty and Instructional Development.

faculty-insight-news-idErin has demonstrated her commitment to learning and excellence in her many roles here. She teaches students and faculty members, as well as serves as an advisor to faculty who seek to teach and improve their online courses. Erin oversaw faculty facilitators in the Online Teaching and Learning faculty development courses this year and worked with them to create positive learning experiences for our faculty.

She has also served as the Quality Matters coordinator and imparts her knowledge of quality online course design in the Quality Matters Peer Reviewer course to faculty throughout Valencia. Erin has also been the bond that has kept the Boot Camp for Online Instruction courses running throughout the year. This is typically the first course that faculty members take when they are interested in teaching online.

On a personal note, as someone walking into a new position and having to learn about Faculty and Instructional Development here at Valencia, Erin helped me make my transition here a smooth one. Her continued support has made a huge difference in the work Online Teaching and Learning has taken on this year.

Currently, Erin is serving as co-chair of the Course and Curriculum Design Online Work Team and as a member of the Faculty Preparedness Online Work Team. Her insights will help us make online and hybrid courses and programs even more effective here at Valencia.

Everyone in Faculty and Instructional Development is deeply thankful for all of her hard work, dedication, creativity, enthusiasm and kindness. I am also personally thankful for her friendship and support in Online Teaching and Learning. Erin is returning to full-time teaching in fall 2015, and her leaving is indeed bittersweet.

The shoes she leaves behind will be hard to fill, but we know her excellent instruction will improve our students’ learning and make them stronger. We wish Erin the best on her return to teaching and look forward to the facilitation work she will provide in our courses next year. Although she will no longer be our Faculty Fellow, we hope she will always be part of our family.
