Phi Theta Kappa Member Elected as International President

Andrew Porter, a student on Valencia’s East Campus since March 2015, triumphed over 11 candidates to win the coveted position of the 2016-2017 international president of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society on Saturday, April 9, 2016, in Washington, D.C.

The international president’s duties include presiding at the Annual Convention and Honors Institute, making annual convention committee appointments, signing all new chapter charters and representing Phi Theta Kappa at regional meetings and educational conferences.

“Andrew has a strong natural communications ability that served him well during the election process in Washington,” said Stacey Johnson, president, East and Winter Park Campuses. “He is also a noble leader in that he immediately gave credit to the entire Valencia Phi Theta Kappa team, who supported and assisted in his election to the presidency. Andrew said he couldn’t have done it without the help of all of the campus PTK students,” Stacey added.

A United States Army veteran, Andrew served for seven years, including a nine-month term in Iraq. His time in the armed forces taught him invaluable lessons on life, service, leadership and the need for education. After his service, Andrew began his college academic studies on East Campus and joined the Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Andrew stated, “Since I have been a part of Phi Theta Kappa, my time has been greatly rewarding; I’ve learned a great deal, grown as a person and as a leader, and most of all forged many great relationships. I am proud to be a member of this prestigious organization.”

During spring break in March 2016, Andrew studied abroad in India. He plans to graduate from Valencia at the end of spring 2017 and transfer to Rollins College to pursue a degree in international affairs.
